Although my wife is boasting on Facebook about buying Sleeping Beauty, I’m the one who came up with the idea and ordered it from Amazon. Albeit a feminine purchase, it’s one of the true Disney classics. Before the new-school Aladdin and The Lion King came along, it was animated movies like Lady and the Tramp and Sleeping Beauty that children adored. And speaking of children, there are two major issues with the 1959 Disney movie in question that makes me wonder if it’s actually appropriate for kids under 17-years-old.
There was never an explanation as to why Maleficent cursed Aurora. Was her heart broken by Aurora’s father years before and now she’s getting revenge? Personally, I think Maleficent is really hot for a witch. She’s got fair skin and a tight body. If only she got rid of the horns, maybe a single prince or king from an outlying land would date her. But if her heart was set on Aurora’s father, then maybe that’s a moot point. The heart wants what the heart wants, and unfortunately when under a cloud of recluse, sometimes one’s only outlet is to ruin the love of another. But I’m only speculating.
Still, what a bitch…
A 23-year-old falling in love with a girl who is barely 16?… Why is Disney promoting statutory rape and why did it take so long for the rest of us to notice? This is quite possibly the most indecent Disney movie of all. Shame on you, Walt.
We’ve seen Disney play this censorship game before. They sneak sexual innuendos into multiple children’s movies: When Aladdin whispers, “Take off your clothes,” to Jasmine on her porch – when the Priest gets a hard-on in The Little Mermaid as he marries off Ariel and Prince Eric – in The Lion King when Simba and Nala are playing in the jungle as adults and the leaves on the ground spell out ‘S-E-X’.I won’t lie, I do like Disney’s perverse mind. If I worked for them I’d probably do the same thing – maybe I’m just jealous of their creativity. But I could never work for Disney because I’m pretty sure their cartoonists have to go through a rigorous background check – Walt didn’t care much for the Jews from what I hear.Aside from anti-Semitism, Disney needs to be sued for censorship violation, once and for all. Sleeping Beauty used to be a classic to me. It was a movie I was going to show my kids. But you can’t threaten a baby’s life and promote statutory rape in the same movie, then slap on a G-rating and expect me to show it to my future daughter and son. Save that stuff for AMC shows.
From now in in my household, Sleeping Beauty is rated ‘R’ and you have to be at least 17-years-old to watch it. Furthermore, I demand Conan the Barbarian (1982) to be lowered to a PG-13 rating because in the movie Arnold Schwarzenegger only mates with an of-age witch – and by law, that is a legal sexual engagement.
