HOUSTON, TEXAS — Rockets Coach Mike D’Antoni had been crafting this play on the chalkboard for months. It was a genius: His players were instructed to get out of the way, let Harden dribble the ball for 23 seconds, and then let him shoot it.
“It was a difficult play to execute,” Rockets Forward Trevor Ariza said. “But we got our heads together and focused. Coach told us to just stand there, while Harden bored the defense to death by doing nothing. Then he chucked it.”
“What a play,” NBA Commentator Marv Albert said. “I’ve never seen a more boring possession in my life. The defense literally fell asleep!”
Aside from the inbound pass to Harden, there were a total of zero passes on the possession.
“That’s why coach D’Antoni is a genius,” James Harden said. “No other coach thinks of plays like that.”
Harden ended up missing the shot horribly, and the Rockets lost 131 to 101. But what a play.
